How to Become a Student Pilot
Nine Easy Steps to Get You in the Air!
Book a Discovery Flight
Your first step into the world of aviation starts with a Discovery Flight. This introductory flight lesson lets you experience what it’s like to fly an aircraft, with hands-on control. It’s a perfect way to see if flying is right for you and can be logged toward your flight hours.
Sign the Waiver and Complete the Health Questionnaire
Before beginning any flight training, you’ll need to complete our waiver and health questionnaire to ensure compliance with aviation safety standards. This must be done prior to your first lesson.
Join Centennial Flyers (Aircraft Rental Club)
To access aircraft for training, you’ll need to join Centennial Flyers, which provides aircraft rentals for students.
To Join: Visit Centennial Flyers to complete your membership. Membership grants you access to a fleet of training aircraft.
Obtain the Required Books, Tools, and Equipment
To get the most out of your training, you’ll need essential materials:
Books & Tools.
A list of suggested equipment and materials can be found in the FAQ.
Ground School & Home Study
Ground school is essential to prepare you for the FAA written exam and to build a strong foundation for flight training.
Suggested Course: I highly recommend using King Schools. I partner with King Schools to monitor student progress through their portal. I encourage students to explore a few courses before committing, and I’m happy to help you make the best choice.
Obtain a Student Pilot Certificate
To fly solo, you’ll need a Student Pilot Certificate from the FAA, obtained through the IACRA system.
How to Apply: Visit IACRA to create an account and while there, apply for a Student Pilot Certificate.
You will need a Certificated Flight Instructor (CFI) to validate your application. Please note your FTN.
Schedule an FAA Medical Examination
Before solo flights, you must pass an FAA medical exam to ensure you’re fit to fly.
How to Schedule: Use the FAA AME Locator to find an examiner near you. The exam typically costs around $200.
Purchase Non-Owned Aircraft Rental Insurance
Before flying solo, it’s required to have non-owned aircraft rental insurance to meet club minimums.
Providers like Avemco can provide the necessary coverage to meet club minimums. Policies usually range from $200-400 per year.
