Instrument Rating Requirements
To qualify for an instrument rating under FAA Part 61, a pilot must meet the following experience requirements:
- Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate.
- Accumulate 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC).
- Log 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time, including:
- 15 hours of instrument flight training with an authorized instructor.
- A 250 nautical mile cross-country flight under instrument flight rules (IFR), including three different instrument approaches at three different airports.
- Pass the FAA Instrument Knowledge Test.
- Complete an FAA check ride with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).
