Instrument Rating

Your Instrument Rating is a Critical Step in Becoming a Safer Pilot

Earn Your Instrument Rating with Summit Wings Aviation

An Instrument Rating (IR) is one of the most valuable upgrades a pilot can earn. It significantly enhances your safety, expands your flying capabilities, and allows you to operate in a wider range of weather conditions. At Summit Wings Aviation, we offer a structured and comprehensive training program designed to turn private pilots into confident, proficient instrument-rated aviators.

Instrument Rating Requirements

To qualify for an instrument rating under FAA Part 61, a pilot must meet the following experience requirements:

  • Hold at least a Private Pilot Certificate.
  • Accumulate 50 hours of cross-country flight time as Pilot in Command (PIC).
  • Log 40 hours of actual or simulated instrument flight time, including:
    • 15 hours of instrument flight training with an authorized instructor.
    • A 250 nautical mile cross-country flight under instrument flight rules (IFR), including three different instrument approaches at three different airports.
  • Pass the FAA Instrument Knowledge Test.
  • Complete an FAA check ride with a Designated Pilot Examiner (DPE).

Flexible Training Paths to Your Instrument Rating

Every pilot’s journey to an instrument rating is unique. That’s why we offer multiple training paths to fit your schedule, budget, and experience level.

Most Comprehensive Training

Path 1: Full-Program Instrument Training

For pilots who prefer a structured, start-to-finish approach, we offer 40 hours of instrument flight training with one of our experienced instructors.

This option provides the most comprehensive, immersive training, ensuring you are check ride-ready while developing strong IFR skills in various real-world scenarios.

Expected Total Cost:
Airplane Rental: $7,500 (50 hours @ $150/hr)
Instructor: $3,900 (60 hours @ $65/hr)
Ground Study Course: $300
Total: $11,700

Great for All Levels of Experience

Path 2: Finish-Up Program for Time-Building Pilots

Many pilots accumulate instrument flight time by time-splitting with other pilots before seeking structured instruction.

If you already have most or all of your 40 instrument hours, we can tailor a training plan to sharpen your skills, refine your procedures, and prepare you for the FAA check ride.

Expected Total Cost:
Varies by Student Readiness/Preparation
Airplane Rental: Min. 3 hours @ $150/hr)
Instructor: Min. 3 hours @ $65/hr
Ground Study Course: $300, if needed
Total: $700+

Most Popular for Saving Money

Path 3: Cost-Effective Training & Time Building

If you’re a private pilot with little to no instrument experience beyond the required three hours for your Private Pilot Certificate, this is the most cost-effective and thorough training method.

Our instructors will establish a solid IFR foundation, after which you can time-build efficiently by flying with safety pilots or other instrument students, before returning for final training and check ride prep. This method balances quality instruction with cost savings, ensuring you develop strong IFR skills while keeping expenses manageable.

Expected Total Cost:
Airplane Rental: $3,000 (20 hours @ $150/hr) for time with Instructor
Instructor: $1,300 (20 hours @ $65/hr)
Airplane Rental: $3,000 (40 hours @ $75/hr) for time split with Safety Pilots
Ground Study Course: $300
Total: $7,600
